FG's 53 | Heavy on the heavy

I managed to stay awake through the entire pre-season finale, despite the god-aweful tackling, pathetic commentary from the local television guys (yawn) and Ed Hochuli's crew butchering calls once again. With just over a week until the season opener at Philadephia, I figured I'd take a crack at how I'd widdle this roster down to 53 players. I don't expect this is how the roster will look, but I'm going 'heavy on the heavy' - lots of tight ends and fullbacks and big fellas. Since McCarthy was a 'star tight end' in his college days, and since he seems to prefer 'the heavy style' I think this lines up well with his philosophy. The order of presentation doesn't mean any-a-thing. Anyways, here's "FG's 53" - enjoy:

Quarter-backs (2): 1 - Ronnie Rodgers, 2 -  Matt Flynn

Half-backs (2): 3 - Ryan Grant, 4 - Brandon Jackson

Full-backs (3): 5 - John Kuhn, 6 - Korey Hall, 7 - Quinn Johnson

Tight-ends (5): 8 - Jermichael Finley, 9 - Donald Lee, 10 - Spencer Havner, 11 - Andrew Quarless, 12 - Tom Crabtree

Wide-receivers (4): 13 - Greg Jennings, 14 - Donald Driver, 15 - James Jones, 16 - Jordy Nelson

Offensive Linemen (9): 17 - Chad Clifton, 18 - Daryn Colledge, 19 - Scott Wells, 20 - Josh Sitton, 21 - Mark Tauscher, 22 - Bryan Bulaga, 23 - TJ Lang, 24 - Evan Dietrich-Smith, 25 - Marshall Newhouse

Specialists (4): 26 - Mason Crosby, 27 - Tim "The Red Masher" Masthay, 28 - Brett Goode, 29 - (Yet-to-be-signed Kick Return Speedster)

Defensive Line (6): 30 - Cullen Jenkins, 31 - Ryan Pickett, 32 - BJ Raji, 33 - Mike Neal, 34 - Justin "Last Chance" Harrell, 35 - Anthony Toribio

Line-backers (9): 36 - Clay Matthews, 37 - Nick Barnett, 38 - Desmond Bishop, 39 - Brandon Chillar, 40 - Brad Jones, 41 - AJ Hawk, 42 - Cyril Obiozor, 43 - Frank Zombo, 44 - Robert Francois

Corner-backs (5): 45 - Charles Woodsen, 46 - Tramon Williams, 47 - Sam Shields, 48 - Brandon Underwood, 49 - Jarrett Bush

Safeties (4): 50 - Nick Collins, 51 - Morgan Burnett, 52 - Derrick Martin, 53 - Charlie Peprah

Odd men out: Kregg Lumpkin, Jarius Wynn
Notable absenses: Jason Spitz, Brady Poppinga

As you can see, I didn't dabble in possible trade-baitery or practice squad tom-foolery. Pretty much my only odd-ball selection is penciling in a 'yet-to-be-signed' kick returner. We need one, folks. Chery was a bust and if I have to watch any more patented Jordy Nelson 10-yard "stumble returns" I will puke up my PBR. Now, I will note that other trades or pick-ups may happen, specifically at safety, where we are thin, but I left that kick return slot open because we just don't have anyone on the current roster who could actually fill this 'theoretical' role. Aside from that 'anomaly' all I care about is the 53-man A-Team. This is the team that will take us back to the Super-Bowl glories. Hope ya'll have a lovely Labor Day holiday. Until next time, FG
